The instructor's role in Pilates

In Pilates, it’s not just the exercise that makes the difference, but the perspective of the person guiding the movement. Every body has a different story: that’s why observation, adaptation, and progression are essential.

Observe before correcting

An instructor doesn’t just look and supervise to check if an exercise “looks right,” but observes breathing, posture, stability, points of contact, compensations and the quality of movement.

Compensations are information

When the body compensates, it’s reducing effort or adapting the movement. The teacher’s role is to read these signals and guide the person toward a more effective and correct movement.

Every body needs a different approach

The same exercise can vary depending on a person’s strength, mobility, and posture. The same exercise can fit for one person and not for another, depending on the situation.

Progress isn’t just about doing harder exercises

Doing difficult exercises doesn’t mean you’re better than others; it means you’re following different paths. Everyone has their own goals and these should be respected and embraced with personalized approaches.

Self-esteem also comes from feeling guided

When a person feels observed and supported, they begin to trust their body more and recognize their own progress. It is the instructors who notice those small improvements that lead to progress in movement.

The instructor’s perspective: seeing the journey

An instructor doesn’t just observe a single class, but tracks evolution over time: greater fluidity, greater confidence, greater awareness.
